Who or what is Beastie?

Beastie is the name of the BSD Daemon, created to adorn the covers of the BSD manuals. There have been a variety of drawings of the daemon since it's creation, many of which can be found at Kirk McKusick's BSD Daemon History page. Kirk is the copyright owner for the daemon and sells BSD Daemon shirts.

Ok, I get the name. Now what is BSD?

BSD (Berkeley Systems Distribution) began a set of patches to the AT&T UNIX operating system distributed by the University of California at Berkeley's Computer Science Research Group (CSRG). Although the CSRG no longer exists, their work has continued through the efforts of a variety of open source and commercial BSD UNIX distributions:

Where can I buy Beastie/BSD stuff?

While many of the BSD operating systems are freely available (FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD as listed above), when it comes to the BSD, "it's not just an operating system, it's a wardrobe."

Where else can I find out about BSD?

In no particular order...
